Barrington Education Foundation Celebrates Another Successful Duck Race

The Barrington Education Foundation (BEF) welcomed families and community members to its annual Duck Race, enjoying beautiful weather, friendly competition, and an afternoon of activities supporting Barrington Public Schools.

Congratulations to this year’s Duck Race winners: Jenifer Arden (first place), Sara Broomhead (second place), and Jennifer Rakeman (third place).

BEF appreciates the Town of Barrington, including the Peck Center for providing tables and chairs, and the Barrington Fire Department for its assistance. Thanks also go to After Five Party Rentals for donating popcorn, Shaw’s for bottled water, and Super Seltzer for refreshments. Pita Pockets, Palagi’s, and Tag Team Treats provided food and treats throughout the event.

Local businesses also contributed raffle baskets and prizes, including Daisy Digins, Aloha Nails, Black Pear, Dunkin Donuts, Ace Hardware, Calm Education, Rumford Pet, Pvolve, May’s Gluten Free Market, Tiffany Salons, La La Luxe Salon, Gloss Hair Studio, Viola Cucina, Rind Cheese Shop, East Bay Oyster Bar, and Honey Dew Donuts.

Barrington Middle School Principal Dr. Andy Anderson and his son, William, served as event emcees, while students from Barrington High School’s LifeSmarts, Best Buddies, Science Olympiad, Environmental, Interact, Chain Reaction, and Spanish clubs organized and ran games for attendees. BEF will announce the winning student club at a later date.

BEF also recognizes its dedicated board members, particularly event co-chairs Azley Savell and Karen Occhialini, for their work organizing this year’s race.

The Foundation thanks everyone who attended, volunteered, donated, or helped make the event possible and looks forward to welcoming the community back next year.

Learn the Basics of Backyard Composting at Barrington Farm School’s Free Workshop

The Barrington Farm School (BFS) will host a free backyard composting workshop, led by Stewart Martin of Providence Gardenworks, on Sunday, October 25th, from 11:00 a.m. to noon. According to the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Center (RIRRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about a quarter of the solid waste taken to the landfill is food scraps, and food accounts for 58% of landfill methane emissions. Composting those food scraps instead reduces greenhouse gas emissions, extends the life of the landfill, and improves soil and plant health.

In Barrington, we have several options for composting food scraps. The Black Earth Curbside Compost Pilot Program offers the convenience of weekly curbside pick-up of food scraps, and the cost is subsidized.

For those willing to transport their food scraps a short distance, Barrington Farm School operates three community drop-off sites: The Barrington Farm School Farm Stand at 100-98 Federal Road, a collection site next to The Peck Center, and a collection site near the Kent Street tennis courts. There also is a compost drop-off next to the Senior Center parking lot near Wood's Pond. These community compost drop-off sites are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, free of charge. Generated compost is used to grow food at BFS with approximately 40-50% of the food donated to area food pantries.

Interested in learning how to compost your own food scraps, the Backyard Composting Workshop on Sunday, October 25th is a great place to start. The workshop will give you the skills and knowledge to compost successfully by addressing:

  • Myths of composting
  • Why composting is important
  • Locating your bin for success
  • Right ratio of “greens“ to “browns”
  • Proper mixing
  • Deterring pests

Stewart Martin of Providence Gardenworks, a composting expert with nearly two decades of hands-on composting experience in urban environments, will lead the workshop. While the workshop is free, advance sign-up is required for planning purposes. Please sign up here.

2026 Road Paving and Crack Filling Projects Completed

The Department of Public Works (DPW) completed its 2026 road paving and crack-filling programs, improving 44 roads throughout Barrington.

As part of the Town’s annual paving program, the Department of Public Works repaved 19 roads to address deteriorating road surfaces. The Town also treated an additional 25 roads through the crack-filling program, which helps prevent water from entering cracks and causing further pavement damage.

Crack filling is a cost-effective way to maintain roads before they need more extensive repairs. By addressing pavement damage early, the Town can extend the life of existing roads and reduce future repair costs.

DPW will continue to evaluate road conditions and schedule paving and preventive maintenance projects based on roadway needs and available funding.
