Mystery Blast Was Reported in Massachusetts, Including Boston Area
Residents in multiple towns said they heard a sudden boom, prompting concern and numerous calls to police and fire departments across the region.
NBC10 meteorologist Pamela Gardner suggested on social media that the sound could have been caused by a bolide or meteor entering the atmosphere, noting unusual atmospheric activity but no evidence of lightning or seismic events.
“There’s a satellite lighting detection around Boston -but no lightning! No earthquakes on USGS either,” she said.
Authorities across several municipalities reported receiving widespread inquiries from residents, but said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The sound was reported in areas including Scituate, Winchester, Arlington, Cambridge, Concord, Lynnfield, and Boston.
Watertown police said the origin of the boom was still unknown, adding that no hazards had been identified.
“It was heard over the eastern part of the state. Unknown origin no reports of hazards at this time,” the department said on social media.
Officials in Coventry, Rhode Island, also noted similar reports, suggesting possible explanations ranging from seismic activity to atmospheric phenomena, though no confirmation was provided.
Cambridge police said they were aware of the reports but stated that no incidents or emergencies had been traced back to the city.
